Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I work through the case?

The simulation will guide you through how to complete this case, there will be instructions on the right hand side of the screen which will tell you what to do. The case begins with free-text input with prompts – this means as you start to type something, if the computer matches it a drop down box will appear with suggested questions to ask. You can ask other questions as well as those which appear. You will be asked to make a diagnosis of the patient's condition after which the scenario will be free-text with no prompting. However, the patient will ask questions which will guide you as to what to say. Make sure you read the text at the bottom of the screen as well as listen to the patient as this will provide you with extra cues.

2. Why can't I access the patient images?

You are unable to access the patient images until you have asked the patient specific questions and the images appear. There are 2 images available showing different parts of the child which will help you make a diagnosis. Once the pictures have popped up you can view them at any time during the simulation.

4. The internet crashed - can I carry on with the case?

Unfortunately not. You will have to start the case from the beginning again.

5. How do I finish the scenario?

You cannot finish the scenario and receive your feedback until you have worked through the whole of the case. Towards the end of the scenario, in the yellow box, you will see the following text 'Once you've replied to the doctor, you will have completed the case and will receive your feedback.' This indicates that you have completed the simulation.

6. Why can't I see the whole of the virtual patient frame?

There is a scroll bar on the right of the page which allows you to fill in the form. Try using 'Ctrl and -' to zoom out. If this does not help, then please email phd.vp.help@gmail.com.

7. How do I print out the feedback transcript?

You can use 'Ctrl and P' to print out directly from the webpage. Alternatively you can copy and paste the feedback text into a word document which would allow you to save it and print it out.

8. Who can I contact if I have any problems?

Please contact Jessica Thompson on phd.vp.help@gmail.com.

The following case is a simulation which may be encountered during every day work, regarding the diagnosis and treatment of a child with a specific illness.

The learning objectives are:

1. To improve knowledge on common childhood conditions

2. To be able to distinguish between different childhood conditions

3. To improve knowledge of OTC treatment in children

4. To be aware of the reference sources available

There are 2 parts to the scenario. The first section is a free-text section which will allow you to ask any questions you feel necessary. Once you begin typing a question, a drop-down list may appear allowing you to ask one of the questions suggested, or you can ask something else. Once you have asked all the questions you feel are required, there is a 'Diagnose' button which you can click on and enter the condition you think the child has. If this diagnosis is correct you will move onto the second part of the scenario. If this diagnosis is incorrect you will be redirected to ask the patient more questions or enter a new diagnosis.

The second part also uses free-text typing but this part is aimed at providing advice and recommending treatment. There will be no drop-down list and no prompting during this section. Please enter each question or piece of advice separately to ensure the system can capture all of the information.

Once you are ready to end the scenario please click the 'End Scenario' button and this will take you to your feedback.

You can see a demonstration of how to use the technology by clicking the 'Watch example video' button below. It may be useful for you to have the BNFC and any books or resources you have regarding childhood conditions ready to help provide information during the consultation.

Click the 'Begin' button below to enter the scenario.
